有些轉折字冷靜地轉折話題到不同的面向討論（通常是相反面），不帶有驚訝的成份。例如 however, though/although, alternatively, otherwise, on the positive/negative/flip side, having said that, that said, on a second thought 而 Nevertheless, Nonetheless, Notwithstanding, instead, yet, despite, even though/so 則傳遞超出預期的高度轉折訊號。也因此在口語後者會唸的比較慢，甚至中斷來加重語氣。
