Whether：無論 / 是否 / 是a 或 b

whether A or B：是 A 或 B

「擬人化」，轉變成一個名詞子句去當做「主詞」

  • Whether she likes green or blue is not important.（粗體字表示把「喜歡哪種顏色」這件事擬人化了，當作主詞來使用）
  • She didn’t know whether he was laughing or crying.（粗體字表示把「是笑還是哭」擬人化了，當作受詞來用）

Whether A or not：是否（這邊的意思和「if」一樣，可以替換。

or not 的部份常常可以省略
or not 可以移到前面加強語氣，口說時會「中斷」來強話那個感覺，或者給自己一些思考的時間。
  • They asked me whether (if) I was tired (or not).
  • I’m not sure whether or not to go to camping this weekend.

whether to：是否去（這裡的「是否」就不像前面能用 if 代替，因為 if to 聽起來很怪！

  • I’m not sure whether to get a new laptop (or not).
  • I’m not sure if to get a new laptop.（沒看過 if to 這種東西）

Whether：無論（當這個意思時，其用法和 however 一樣，放在句首句尾句中來修飾整句

or not 在「無論」的用法裡，若省掉會很怪，試著翻成中文就知道，不能省！
