影片中指出若當「機會」使用時 opportunity 則用於描述可以透過努力取得的機會，而 chance 純粹描述運氣帶來的機會。此外，因為 chance 相當萬用，所以口語上常會使用 chance 來替代 opportunity 及 risk，也就是說，這個字較為 informal 而且容易造成誤解。筆者建議做為一位 EFL，最好是能多用在寫作時也能用的字（opportunity & risk）。
Opportunity / Chance = 機會
- This job is a good opportunity for you. 仔細觀查本句 opportunity 相當明顯是「一個機會」所以使用冠詞為可數形態。且 opportunity 暗指「好的機遇」或者對個人的成長、事業等等有利，且可以透過努力取得。
- This job is a good chance for you. 仔細觀查本句 chance 相當明顯是「一個機會」所以使用冠詞為可數形態。然而 chance 暗指因為客觀因素導致「高成功率」，例如剛好工作的面試人員是自己的學長姊。
- There is not much opportunity / chance for promotion. 本句之所以採用不可數形態，是因為想表達的並非「一個機會」，而是帶有「機率」概念的機會。此外，使用 opportunity 或 chance 仍會傳達出不同的語氣：前者強調「機遇」而後者則較是「機率」。
There is a Chance, Possibility of = 有…的機會
- There is a chance of rain later today. 這邊不可使用 opportunity 這個本身帶有「機遇」概念的字，而應使用 chance 這個中性字。此外，因為 of 的存在，這裡變成是「一個可能下雨的機會」，所以使用「可數」形態。
- There is a possibility of injury when skiing. 本句的 possibility 從字典上看起來似乎就是 chance 的意思，然而事實上 possibility 最常被理解成「可能性」。也就是說雖然本句可以翻譯成「滑雪時，有受傷的機會」，但事實上其真正的意思是「滑雪時，我受傷的可能性」。
- There is a strong chance / possibility that it could happen again. 使用 chance 本句可以翻譯成「有大的機會還會再發生」，使用 possibility 時，則應翻成「有很大的可能性還會再發生」。
注意到 opportunity 習慣上不描述「機率」所以不接 there is 也不使用 that而是接 “to” 來指出能利用該機，詳見後續文章說明。
Take a Chance / Risk that = 冒險
- We took a chance that the train is not full. 本句的 take a chance 強調「報酬 + 風險」。注意到 that 帶出來的副詞子句僅描述 take a chance 所得的「報酬」。
- I’d rather pay the money than take a chance that she might be hurt (Ref). 本句的 take a chance 強調「報酬 + 風險」。注意到 that 帶出來的副詞子句僅描述 take a chance 所得的「風險」。這個用法影片中提到較為 informal 因此筆者建議使用 risk 來取代這個用法。
- I’d rather pay the money than take / run a risk that she might be hurt. 本句 take a risk 僅僅強調「高風險」。也因此注意到 that 帶出來的副詞子句描述 take a risk 所帶來的風險。此外風險這種東西是隨時存在的，因此也常接 run 來與一次性的 take 做出區別。
注意到當使用 of 來「明確描述」冒險時，應接明確的定冠詞 “the”。此外可以看到本例句帶出的 messing it up 是指風險，所以建議改用 risk。
如之前所述，使用 take the chance of 雖然也能帶出「風險」，然而較不正式，建議 EFL 讀者習慣本圖例句的 risk 用法。
the Opportunity of … to … 利用機會去
因為 opportunity 本身帶有「明確且可努力取得」的概念，因此當接到 take 時，意思是「利用那個機會」去做某事。換句話說，該機會是一個「確定的機會」，所以使用定冠詞 “the” 而不是 “a” 這個不確定的冠詞。
I was given the opportunity of going to college. 搭配 opportunity 這個帶有「機遇」概念的字，表達這個「機會」是難得而且正面的，值得努力去爭取的。
I took the opportunity of the halftime break to grab a short nap. opportunity 和其他人很不一樣，其 of 後面帶出來的並非像 chance 或 risk 那種「冒險的事情」，而是在描述那是什麼樣的一個機會，最後再接 “to” 來描述利用那個機會能做的某事。特別注意到這邊沒提到「報酬」，因為 opportunity 本質上並非與風險報酬相關，而是一個「確定的、抓住後可以做某事」的機會。
