注意這裡的 to 是介系詞!

有的字典認為使用 to read 暗指「選擇」，因此筆者建議僅使用名詞＆V-ing 來描述個人興趣。

選擇偏好 — Would Prefer

I’d prefer (not) to go skiing this year rather than go / instead of going on a beach holiday.
They’d prefer us (not) to come later.
加了 would 之後指出並非個人興趣而是「偏好某個選擇」

描述選擇偏好時，有的字典認為應使用 to V. 而不是 Ving，所以筆者建議 prefer to v 僅用於「選擇偏好」就好，應避免把它用在個人興趣。就這點來說，會與影片說明不太一樣。

此外，因為使用 to Verb 了，後面的比較對像按 prefer 的習慣要使用 to 橋接，結果就會變成有「兩個 to」，所以應如例句那樣改為 rather than 或 instead of，且特別注意到 rather than 後按英文習慣「必接原型動詞」。

第二句 prefer 接人後再接 to 描述「偏好…做某選擇」。最後，注意到 prefer 僅能描述「現在＆未來」。若想描述過去請見下方 would rather。

選擇偏好 — Would Rather

I would rather stay at home than go out tonight.
I would rather not go out tonight.
would rather = would prefer to

would rather 後方的動詞被 would 還原了，所以和 prefer to 一樣都接原型 V。而 than 在這邊做為「連接詞」，所以後方的動詞與前面一樣要接原型。或者讀者也可以記得反正 rather than 習慣上就是要接原型動詞。

I’d rather have seen it at the cinema than on DVD.
這是在描述過去，不可用 prefer！

在描述「過去」某件事的選擇偏好時，只能用 would rather。相對地 prefer 僅被用來描述現在與未來。又因為在描述過去的偏好時「必定後悔」，中文翻成「那時寧願」。所以時態需改成假設語氣。如上句中的完成式。

I’d rather you stayed at home tonight.
I’d rather you didn’t go out tonight.
I’d rather you hadn’t rung me at work.
注意，只有第三句是在講過去！

在描述「偏好…做某選擇」時，would rather somebody Verb 應把時態改成「過去式」。如果要描述過去「偏好…那時做某選擇」時，則應把過去式再改成如第三句的「過去完成式」。

特別注意 rather than 後面一定要加「原型」，就算前面是過去式。如果用 instead of 替換，那就要變成接 Ving。

本句 than 做為連接詞連接 worse / better

but rather than = 但不是…反而…。注意到前面是過去式 finished 而後面則是原型 calm down。

but rather = 反而是…。特別注意到如果僅僅寫 but rather 沒有 than，那被排除的反而是前面一句 replace you at your job 了！

would rather … than / instead of = 寧可…也不…。本句標題的 than 為連接詞用法，所以 see 與 be 同時樣因為 would 而變成原型。在內文的部份，可以發現 would rather see 與 instead of admitting 時態不同，這是因為 of 為介詞，必接名詞。
