Except 後面的 for 可以省略，也可換成其他介詞
except for = 除了。注意到加 for 的狀況通常是「遇到逗號」，變插入用法時使用，Catholic = 天主教。

except that = 只不過。帶有否定另一句的意思。

注意到 except that 暗指前句為「假的 / 不可能」，所以事實上 Bill 並沒有去。仔細觀查第二句 except that 其實也還保有「排除」的意思。也就是說考試全部都好，只有讀錯的那個不好。此外，第二句亦暗指其實考試狀況不好。only to = 結果卻 (表達出失望及否定前句)
only to = 只不過卻。本句一樣否定了前句，也就是說「我們都知道要怎麼減肥」，然而卻做不到，only to 發現我們無法堅持下去（gorge 狂咽，pang 劇痛
except that = 只不過（本句有「排除」的意思，也就是說除了變有錢以及白人變多，沒什麼變。然而 except that 又暗指前句相反，所以事實上，那個地方真的變了很多！
注意到本新聞使用假設語氣 might have 來強調 except that 前句為假。如果不想強調可以把 have 拿掉。
Except 接句子的用法
由於 except that 有特殊的「否定」功能。所以若想接一個句子的話，必需使用 when / one thing:
except + when = 除了（介詞）本句 when 帶出來的也算是名詞子句。
except for one thing 此用法後面可以利用 Em-dash 帶出被排除的句子。此用法一般人不太清楚，事實上逗號或 Em-dash 的插入語除了常見的一個名詞之外，加一個句子也是可以的。
except for one thing 此用法後面利用冒號帶出來的句子要記得「大寫」。因為冒號後面本來就是要接一個句子，所以使用冒號會比用 Em-dash 加一個句子更自然。Unvaccinated = 未接種疫苗的。
