生活中常用的「百分比、幾分之幾」基本上是一個分數 (fraction)。然而，當分子與分母的單位不同時，那就必需使用 ratio 與 rate 來描述。
百分比用法
- 名詞用法：Water covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface.
- 形容詞用法：I received a 5% increase in my salary.
- 副詞用法：He feels 100 percent better.
be … percent sth = 有百分之幾是…。由大寫小也可以直接使用 be 動詞。此處的 percent 為「形容詞」。
be … percent Adj. = 有百分之幾是…。注意到本句 percent 後面的 female 沒有加「s」，這是因為此處的 female 是當作「形容詞」使用，而 percent 則是當「副詞」來修飾 female。
Ratio
大白話的英語講法：For every two people, we only bring one sandwich. 數學家的講法：The ratio of sandwiches to people is 1:2 (one to two). 或者 The ratio is one sandwich per two people. 注意到 the ratio of A to B 中，A和B一定要寫複數名詞，而 one A per two B 中，接 one 的 A 應寫單數名詞。

- The college has a 12:1 ratio between students and teachers.
- The college’s student-to-teacher ratio is 12 to 1. 本句「生師比」是形容詞所以應 hyphen
- The office has a high ratio of males to females. 注意到 to 後面是分母，所以本例句中男性站多數。
Rate for Speed
當 ratio 的分母為「時間」就可以稱為 rate 所以說它是個帶有「速度感」的單字。而把分母化簡為 1 後稱為 unit rate = 每單位時間有多少分子。例如 The car’s rate is 120 miles per 3 hours, and the unit rate for it is 40 miles per hour.
- Asylum seekers were entering Britain at a rate of 1,600 per day. 本句 at a rate of 是常用句形，且利用 per 把單位指出來。
- Nurses are demanding higher rates of pay. 注意到這邊的 rates 使用複數，表示不只有一個 rate（不同的工作有不同的 rate）
Rate for Proportion
在某些分母不是時間的狀況下，然而分母分字同單位，也會利用 rate。例如這則新聞寫到 In 2023, the U.S. marriage rate is 6 per 1,000 people. 可以看到這個數字分母分子同單位，是用來描述「佔比或份額 (Proportion)」也就是說它不能用 ratio 來描述。
- Australia’s unemployment rate rose to 6.5% in February. 本句 unemployment rate 分母子相同，所以不能用 ratio。且注意到 rose to 是指漲到 6.5% 然而如果寫 by 6.5% 則是漲了 6.5%。
- They only pay tax at a rate of 5%. 稅金通常是按交易的的金額或收入的金額的「一部份」來扣，所以使用 rate。
- Some hotels offer special rates for children. 不同的 hotel 有不同的 rate 所有使用複數。此外這邊的 rate 其實是指「打折」的比率，因為打折的分母分子都是錢，所以使用 rate。
- a rapid increase in the divorce rate 英文很喜歡前一個單字有 in 就會搭配介系詞 in。
- The failure rate is quite high. 這邊使用 rate 可以想像它如果分子母相同，那就是失敗者佔比很高。而如果分母是時間，那意思就變成很短的時間內就會失敗一次，看對話的情境而定。
